The Onrust Auxiliary Club of Stockton Yacht Club was formed by the
wives of the members early after Stockton Yacht Club was established in 1930. In the beginning Stockton Yacht Club was a "men's club" with regards to holding offices or voting on matters of Club business. Just like women today, if you leave us sitting chatting, we are going to put our heads together and tackle projects to improve things.
The "men" soon figured out that if you accept the ideas and acknowledge good intentions, this will make for a much easier load for everyone, at least for the "men." I've been told that it was quite an event when the gals took over the cooking in the galley and before long the galley was remodeled and a women's room was added to the building. We've remodeled the women's room since then and have quite a nice one today.
The events that Onrust hosts are fund raisers but always done with a FUN flare. Some of the many events that Onrust hosts are live & silent Auctions, the Luau, Elegant Evening with a piano bar and a professional piano player, Monte Carlo Night and our Holiday Christmas Ball. Money raised from these events are used to make donation during the holidays and throughout the year to various local area charities. Hospice, The Women's Center, Mary Graham Hall and Stockton Food Bank are only a few of the organizations that we support.
In addition to outside projects, Onrust also pays for improvements to the Club. We have replaced chairs, tables, silverware, windows, awnings, maintain the beautiful hardwood floor, and replaced the swamp cooler with a much needed central heat A/C unit in the galley. There are many more and many more to come. Dues for our organization are $20 per year and being active in the club is very rewarding.
How did we get our name, you ask??
ONRUST
Yachts had been used in both Great Britain and Holland since the 17th Century. In the history of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, which later became the English colony of New York, there is mention of a yacht, or boat, built for pleasure boating, named "ONRUST" (Restless), which is claimed to be the first decked vessel built in America.
The "ONRUST" was 44 feet in length and followed the characteristics and proportions of the Dutch boats used in Holland. It is probable that this craft was used for commercial purposes as well, when not in use as a pleasure craft. It is from this vessel that ONRUST CLUB of
Stockton California, derives it name.
The Onrust organization is not limited to women, we have several male
members too. We too recognize that "many hands make light work" and sometimes we have been known to solicit the assistance of our men to tackle the heavy work. Everyone is welcome!
